Best Picture Oscar — Location Showdown — Nominee #8: True Grit

True Grit

While I’m not usually a fan of Westerns, the Coen brothers take on the classic True Grit managed to suck me in.  And someone please give that Haillee Steinfeld an Oscar.  Her performance as Mattie Ross, the determined 14-year old on the hunt for her father’s killer, overshadows both Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.

My only complaint was the length.  Some scenes could have been tighter. In my odd sort of way, I like to compare it to Gangs of New York — they could’ve shaved off 30 minutes or so and I would’ve still gotten the gist.  But then I again I can’t sit still for too long.

Set in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the bulk of filming was actually completed in Texas.

Best Picture Oscar — Location Showdown — Nominee #8: True Grit

Primary Location: Granger, Texas

Prettiness Factor: Up, up, and away.  That Texas backdrop sure is purty.

Further Resources:

IMDB — The site for all things movie, it never ceases to entertain.  For example, as a gag in the closing credits, Buster Coen (Ethan’s son) is listed as “Mr. Damon’s ab double”.
True Grit — the movie.
True Grit Tours — If you’re a fan of the original True Grit with John Wayne, well, it wasn’t filmed in Texas.  It was filmed in Colorado.  This company will take you on a tour of the locations.

Here’s where I park my trailer…

Only one film left…Winter’s Bone.  Post coming soon…
