Next Up: A Tanzania Safari with Shadows of Africa

On the Lam in Tanzania

Aside from a spectacular couple of weeks in South Africa a few years ago, and backpacking through Egypt when I was a much younger man, I haven’t spent a lot of time in Africa.

That’s all about to change in August though.

I’m over-the-moon-head-over-heels excited to be heading to Tanzania for the very first time…in just a couple of days!

I was invited by safari specialists Shadows of Africa to experience The Best of Tanzania Express Safari, and it looks like it’s a doozie. I’ll fly into Kilimanjaro airport and spend the first night in Arusha before heading out into that great big wild looking for those great big beasts (and I’m sure lots of smaller ones too.)

I’ll get to visit Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, and a little old tract of land called the Serengeti. Not sure if you’ve heard of that one. 😉

All kidding aside, while the primary focus for most folks on a Tanzania safari is to spot The Big Five (lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros), I’ll also be on the lookout for The Quirky Five. I’m not quite sure what those are yet, but I do have a nose for finding the unique and unusual, and animals are no exception.

I’m pretty certain this little fella below will make the list. It’s called a Cerval, and it looks someone’s plunked a cat’s head on a leopard, then enlarged its ears just so it’d be sure to hear the other animals’ laughter.

That’s the stuff I am hoping to see. And let me tell you, I am pumped!

If you’d like to follow along on social media, I’m using the hashtag #shadowssafari.

Have you been on a safari or visited Tanzania? What was your experience like? I’d love to hear your thoughts…

  1. Cant believe we didn’t see that Cerval creature. I’m on the hunt for it – want to join me on an adventure to find it. We can just give Timo a call sure and he will tell us exactly how many, where they are and how long they take to deliver a newborn. Great to meet you and safe travels! Jonny

  2. Tanzania has a lot to offer but if you have the heart for adventure, a wildlife safari in Kenya may just steal it. Kenya offers unforgettable wildlife experiences in the midst of its iconic landscapes.
