Semana Santa — Holy Easter Week in Antigua, Guatemala
In my previous post on Semana Santa in Antigua Guatemala I said I would post some night photos of the floral carpets and processions. So here goes more of the Easter weekend photo marathon . These were taken on Good Friday of last year, which draws the largest crowds…

Carpets at night

Vibrant colours shine in the light

- Putting the final touches on the carpet

- Hoisting the cross

Even the Grim Reaper makes an appearance

The Crown of Thorns

These pictures are great – what a fantastic experience!
Thanks Kristin — I feel very lucky to have been able to experience it…
Great shots that tell a fascinating story!
Thanks Robin!
Really interesting looking ceremony and great shots!
Thanks! It was awesome. Wish I had a better camera though…
gorgeous photos! love the vibrant colors. must have been incredible in person too!
I was so glad I went — it was such a geat atmosphere…
Beautiful shots. And those flower arrangements are amazing. It’s Easter sunday here in Cartagena and I’m wondering what’s going on around town. I hope they’re not going to do the re-enactman with live people like they do in the Phillipines.
If they do, make sure you get some great photos!!
Love the photos. And Jill, the live re-enactments are too intense. I’ve seen some when I was still living in the Philippines and I just could not bring myself to watch all of it.
great shots! semana santa, what an amazing time to be in antigua. even though ive spent a lot of time there, ive always missed it. jess told me all about it, sounds (and looks) incredible.
Thanks Jamie — it was an EXCELLENT time to be there…
Great collection of photos – looks like an interesting and fun celebration!
It was very intense at times. You could see that some of the participants were actually in pain, but in a ‘rapture’ sort of way. It was great to see for sure.
These are powerful, Raymond! I wish I could have been there to witness this, luckily, your pics are the next best thing!
Aww…thanks Renee! You are too sweet!!
The colors are gorgeous! I would love to decorate a room around them!
I tend to go for more muted tones, but I can see the appeal for sure!
Love the carpets!
They match the drapes.
Great photos of Holy Week in Guatemala!
Thanks Jeremy!
I had the chance to visit Antigua a couple weeks ago, just at the beginning of lent. They already had a floral carpet inside one of the churches. I must say that is an impressive work of art!
The carpets are everywhere! Saw a couple inside of the courtyards of hotels and smaller businesses as well. So much work goes into them…
GORGEOUS. Wow.
Cool post! It looks like this was a pretty cool thing to witness. I love the flower carpet – it is so beautiful! I wish the US appreciated flowers more.
Maybe there should be a carpet made of fries for the US?
